Military-Industrial Complex Warning turns 50
This past Martin Luther King Day Jan 17th also marked the 50th Anniversary of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Farewell Address warning of the “military-industrial complex.” Televised across the nation on January 17th, 1961, Eisenhower’s speech on the eve of newly elected President Kennedy’s inauguration warned:
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”
Eisenhower was also known for his famous quote: “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” A five-star general, Eisenhower was keenly aware of growing militarization and the costs to our society… his warning is as relevant today as ever.
