Bill Attacking Free Speech on Palestine/Israel Now in SC Senate

SC State Rep. Alan Clemmons recently smeared the liberal Jewish peace group J Street as “anti-Semitic”, an extreme opinion that was widely panned.  But the SC House recently passed a bill sponsored Clemmons that would enshrine the same kind of smear tactics into SC law.  H.3643  invokes a controversial and vague State Department definition of anti-semitism to smear and  silence legitimate criticism of the state of Israel on campuses in South Carolina.  Language in the bill referencing a “What is Anti-Semitism Relative to Israel?” fact sheet is a direct attack on First Amendment protected political speech and intentionally blurs the line to conflate and equate legitimate viewpoints on Palestine/Israel with anti-Semitism, a backdoor form of censorship.  We’ve challenged the bill in both House and Senate subcommittees; both mostly ignored our concerns and rubber stamped the bill without discussion.  However, the bill was blocked in the last session by Senator Brad Hutto.  Now there is a rush now to get the bill passed with the new session in January of 2018.

ACTION ALERT: Netanyahu Speech Undermines Diplomacy with Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s fearmongering speech to Congress today undermines President Obama and our allies’ efforts to negotiate a deal with Iran over its nuclear program.  Containing naked fearmongering, outright lies, illogical statements, unrealistic demands and even a few valid points, Bibi Netanyahu’s speech is at best an Israeli election year ploy and at worst an attempt to inject a foreign government’s agenda into Congress, sabotaging an Iran peace deal. The time to speak out is NOW…

TAKE ACTION! Tell Your Congressman to Support Diplomacy with Iran

1. Take Netanyahu’s Speech with a Grain of Salt

2. Support President Obama and our Allies’ Diplomatic Efforts for a Nuclear Deal with Iran.

Email & Call your Congressmen! A list of contact information is below.

*Representative James Clyburn (SC-6) was the lone South Carolina Congressman to have skipped the speech.  Please thank him for taking a stand and voice your support for diplomacy.

1. Write one email message; copy and paste to send to your 1 Representative in the House & two Senators. Three birds, one stone.  Keep it short and to the point, but put it in your own words.

2. Call your Rep in the House, and then call the two Senators if you have time. Reps are more responsive to phone calls.  They will ask for your name, city/address.  Make your points briefly, short and to the point.  They are likely just keeping a tally so they don’t need to hear your opinion in depth.

ACTION ALERT: SC Legislators Tour Illegal Israeli Settlements, Sign the Petition

Pro-settler tour of West Bank whitewashes system of apartheid

In December 2014, a delegation of twelve South Carolina state legislators traveled to Israel on a business promoting mission. They also visited illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. State Representative Alan Clemmons (R-Horry County) led the group that visited the Israeli settlements of Efrat and Shomron at the behest of the right-wing settler group the YESHA Council.  Since returning, some legislators have misrepresented the situation in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian West Bank based on one-sided and very skewed impressions they received from visiting the Israeli settlements.

TAKE ACTION! SIGN THE PETITION asking SC Legislators to Recognize the Illegality of Israeli Settlements in the West Bank and Israel’s Apartheid Policies Toward Palestinians

CONTACT David at david@carolinapeace.org for more information and more opportunities to take action.

ACTION ALERT: Stop Israel’s Misuse of US-Supplied Tear Gas

March 13th marked three years since American non-violent activist Tristan Anderson was severely injured when an Israeli fired tear gas cannister struck him in the head.  Unfortunately, this was no accident, but part of a pattern of by the IDF of irresponsibly using disproportionate and lethal force in dealing with non-violent demonstrations by firing tear gas AT protesters and at close range. Two Palestinian non-violent protesters have been killed in this way, Bassem Abu Rahman of Bil’in who was shot in the chest at close range and Mustafa Tamimi of Nabi Saleh who was shot in the face with a tear gas cannister at close range.
