Ending the Endless Wars: Repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Force

Remember President Bush and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld telling us that the war on terror would be endless?  No it won’t be, if Rep. Barbara Lee (CA) passes her very sensible bill.

“Congress finds that the Authorization for Use of Military Force…signed into law on September 18, 2001, has been used to justify a broad and open-ended authorization for the use of military force and such an interpretation is inconsistent with the authority of Congress to declare war and make all laws for executing powers vested by the Constitution in the Government of the United States.”
~ Excerpt from H.R. 6282

That legislation would repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force that was passed just after September 11, 2001.  That authorization has been used to justify U.S. military interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other countries; torture; holding detainees indefinitely, running up military spending, extravagant and ineffective spending of tens of billions of tax dollars on so-called intelligence.  We should follow Rep. Barbara Lee’s leadership to help her get H.R. 6282 enacted.  Read FCNL’s statement from 2001 opposing this Authorization.
